Export Control

The Problem

The UK has one of the most rapidly growing Solar PV capacities in the world with the total now over 5GW. This is now providing many issues to Distribution Network Operators (DNO’s) to maintain the stability of an ageing grid that was only designed to provide electricity, not receive it. This technical problem often leads to smaller systems than required being installed as larger projects are not financially feasible when grid upgrades are taken into consideration. Read case study.

The Solution

This install limitation has now however been removed with the recent introduction of Export Control Systems. Export Control Systems work by constantly monitoring the output of the installation and if this is ever found to be exporting more than what has been agreed with the DNO, the Energy Management System (EMS) will de-rate the inverters to reduce the generation.

During periods of high demand the EMS will then remove its limitations on the inverters allowing them to generate to their full potential ensuring you can get the most out of your system when you need it. This system can therefore provide variable generation to maximise export without venturing over the limit at which it is a problem for the grid.

Note: Enviko will only install Export Control Systems that de-rate your inverters rather than turn them off completely unless otherwise requested.

The Benefits

By incorporating an Export Control system into a solar installation it is therefore possible to install an array that will match the demand fully when it is at its highest and yet not cause the grid any issues when it is at its lowest.

The financial savings achieved from the inclusion of this system have the potential to be huge as not only can all of your green energy now be generated without cost but also a significant initial grid upgrade cost can be avoided.

In addition to these companies can now give themselves greater energy security by installing a larger system than required in the knowledge that should the company grow in the future their system can match the increase in demand.

Export Control Systems are therefore now causing many companies to revisit their Solar PV plans and either expand arrays or even deem projects that initially were not viable to now be financially beneficial. Contact us for more information.

As part of the UK’s government Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) we are accredited installers have an impressive portfolio of solar PV systems throughout the UK, helping each of our clients reduce their carbon footprint whilst also tackling the problems of rising energy costs.

The financial logic becomes obvious when you consider that returns on these systems can be as high as 15% and the obvious fact that traditional energy prices have risen far faster than inflation
